Protect the offer: grades still decide admission

Every acceptance is conditional on finishing the year as you started it. Colleges do rescind, and second semester is when it happens.

Step-by-Step Guide

Senior grades after the applications are in

The offer is conditional

Every admission letter is conditional on completing senior year at the level that earned it. Colleges receive a final transcript in June and they do read it. Offers are rescinded every year — not many, but the students it happens to are always surprised.

What actually triggers a review

  • A grade dropping two levels or more, particularly to a D or F
  • A pattern of decline across several courses rather than one bad result
  • Dropping a course listed on the application without telling the college
  • A disciplinary incident, including academic dishonesty
  • Failing a course required for graduation

A single B where there was an A is not the issue. A collapse is.

If a grade is genuinely slipping

Act in February, not in May.

  1. Talk to the teacher this week and ask exactly what would change the grade
  2. Get tutoring — schools and libraries have free options
  3. Complete missing work, which is the cause far more often than difficulty with the material
  4. Tell your parents early

If you need to change your schedule

Email the admissions office before dropping anything. Colleges admitted you partly on the strength of the schedule you listed. Most will accept a well-explained change; almost none accept finding out in June. This is a two-sentence email and it removes the entire risk.

If something has already gone wrong

Contact the college proactively and explain, with any context that matters — illness, a family event. Colleges are far more willing to work with a student who told them than with one they discovered. Proactive contact is the single thing that most improves the outcome.

The realistic frame

You are not being asked for a perfect semester. You are being asked not to stop. Keep attending, keep submitting work, keep the grades in the range that got you in.
