Respond to a deferral

A deferral is not a rejection — the file moves to the regular round and gets read again. Respond within two weeks of the decision.

Step-by-Step Guide

You were deferred

What it means

Your application moves from the early round into the regular pool and will be read again alongside everyone else. It is not a rejection and it is not a waitlist. Deferred applicants at highly selective schools are admitted at roughly 5 to 20 percent — several times the waitlist rate.

Do this within two weeks

  1. Read the school's instructions first. Some explicitly ask for no additional material. Follow that — sending anyway reads as not listening.
  2. Send a letter of continued interest if the school accepts one. One page: you remain interested, what is new since applying, one or two specific reasons for this school.
  3. Send first-semester grades as soon as they are final, through the counselor's mid-year report.
  4. Add one meaningful update if you have one — a competition result, a new role, a finished project. Do not manufacture one.

The strategic part, this week

A deferral changes the shape of the rest of the list.

  • Confirm every Regular Decision application is submitted and complete
  • Confirm at least two genuine safeties, financial as well as academic
  • If an ED2 school makes sense and you would attend it without hesitation, its deadline is January 1 and that decision has to be made now

What not to do

  • Do not send a package of extra material nobody asked for
  • Do not have a parent contact the admissions office
  • Do not take it as a verdict on the student. Early rounds at selective schools defer very strong applicants routinely, for institutional reasons that have nothing to do with the file.

Keep the momentum

The most common real cost of a December deferral is not the decision — it is the two weeks of lost work that follow it. The regular applications still need finishing.
