Columbia: the complete school report for parents
Columbia rates 7 of the 18 admission factors Very Important, among them course rigor, GPA and the essay. This is a genuinely holistic review. It does not consider demonstrated interest and the interview, so campus visits and emails will not move the decision. With a 4.9% admit rate and 75% of enrolled students at a 4.0 GPA or above, the transcript is the entry ticket and scores are optional but help when they are strong. Transfer applicants are admitted at 9.2% against 4.9% for first-years, so the transfer route is materially wider.
Columbia is officially Columbia University in the City of New York, also known as Columbia University. Admissions figures below come from its 2025-2026 Common Data Set (see the source), with the admission-factor grid re-read from that file on 2026-10-21.

What’s new at Columbia for 2026-27
This is Columbia's last test-optional cycle. Columbia College and Columbia Engineering stay fully test-optional for the 2026-27 cycle, and applicants who do not submit scores are not disadvantaged. On 12 June 2026 Columbia announced that SAT or ACT scores will be required of all first-year and transfer applicants starting with the 2027-28 cycle (fall 2028 entry), with a waiver available to applicants who face challenges meeting the requirement.
