Arkansas Heroes Scholarship

Offered by Arkansas Division of Higher Education · Free to apply

The Arkansas Heroes Scholarship covers in-state tuition, on-campus housing and mandatory fees for up to eight semesters at public or private Arkansas colleges for the spouses and dependent children of Arkansans killed or permanently and totally disabled in military service or in the line of duty. Covered military situations include those killed or missing in action, prisoners of war, Medal of Honor or Purple Heart recipients and 100 percent totally and permanently disabled veterans. Covered public servants include law enforcement officers, firefighters, sheriffs, constables, game wardens, EMTs, forestry and highway department workers, correction and community punishment employees, and teachers. The student must have lived in Arkansas for a year, be a citizen or permanent resident, be under 26 if a dependent child, and be enrolled or accepted at an approved Arkansas school. For military families, three months of federal Chapter 35 benefits are deducted first, so a Chapter 35 application by June 15 is required. Apply in the SAMS portal by July 1.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Arkansas residents
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
