AWS Foundation National Scholarships
Offered by American Welding Society (AWS) Foundation · Free to apply
The American Welding Society Foundation's National Scholarships are its largest awards for students heading into welding and related fields. More than 130 donor-funded scholarships, worth over $700,000 in total, support students in a certificate, associate or bachelor's program in welding, welding engineering or a related discipline. Awards range from $2,500 to more than $10,000, are paid to the school, and can cover tuition, fees, books, supplies and required equipment. One online application at scholarship.aws.org considers a student for every national scholarship they fit. It asks for short personal statements about background, welding or work experience and career goals, a summary of school costs, an official transcript (a high school transcript is accepted), two letters of recommendation and a headshot. Some awards require financial need shown with the FAFSA Submission Summary, and some prefer or require AWS student membership. Applications open December 1 and close March 1 for the following fall.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- More rivalsOpen nationwide, so the field is large
- Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
- Fewer rivalsRecommendation letters are required, a step many applicants skip
- Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
- Fewer rivalsRestricted to specific intended majors
- More rivalsA five-figure award attracts a bigger field
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
