Esperanza Education Fund Scholarship

The Esperanza Education Fund was founded to invest in the immigrant experience of the Washington, D.C. region, and it prizes the qualities it associates with that journey: hard work, resourcefulness, perseverance through adversity, and commitment to community. The fund was launched on March 20, 2009 with co-sponsorships from 11 local youth and immigrant organizations, and it remains volunteer-led and community-financed. Immigrant students and children of immigrants in Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia can receive up to $10,000 from this fund, and immigration status is not a factor: undocumented students with or without DACA may apply. The qualifying test is birthplace, either the student was born outside the US or both parents were, plus a household income limit that scales with family size, roughly $75,000 for one person up to about $141,000 for eight. Each scholar is also matched with a mentor who stays with them through college, which is rare at this award size. Recent graduates still qualify if they finished high school or a GED within the past three years and have not yet started college.
