The Future Ready Iowa Last-Dollar Scholarship is a state workforce initiative from the Iowa Department of Education, created to fill employer demand in Iowa's shortage fields while keeping the credential essentially free for the student. The scholarship was created in 2018 as part of the Future Ready Iowa Act, which passed both chambers of the Iowa Legislature with unanimous, bipartisan support. The Act set a statewide target of 70 percent of Iowa's workforce holding education or training beyond high school. Career-training students at Iowa community colleges, and at some accredited private Iowa colleges, can have their remaining tuition and mandatory fees paid in full once every other grant and scholarship is applied. The program of study has to appear on Iowa's high-demand jobs directory, which covers healthcare, the trades, IT and more and is updated regularly. Recent high school graduates and adult learners age 20 and older both qualify. There is no separate application and no essay: the FAFSA is it, and the college adds the award to the aid package after confirming the Student Aid Index is at or below the annual cap, raised to 30,000 for 2026-27. The FAFSA opens October 1 and must be filed by July 1 for that academic year, and it has to be refiled every year the scholarship continues.
