Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship

Offered by Indiana Commission for Higher Education · Free to apply

The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship is Indiana's service scholarship for high-achieving students who want to teach. It pays up to $10,000 a year for four years at an eligible Indiana college, in exchange for teaching full time for five years at an eligible Indiana school after graduation; students who do not complete the service have the money converted to a loan. High school seniors get priority, though college freshmen and sophomores may apply. Applicants must be Indiana residents graduating from an Indiana high school and meet one academic test: top 20 percent of their class, a top 20 percent ACT or SAT score, or a 3.0 GPA. The application on ScholarTrack asks for academic, activity and work history plus a 250-word written response to a teaching prompt, and the FAFSA is required each year. The 2027-28 application opens in late October 2026 and closes January 31, 2027, with decisions emailed in April. Renewal requires a 3.0 college GPA and 30 credits a year.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Indiana residents
  • Fewer rivalsAn essay is required, which filters out casual applicants
  • Fewer rivalsRestricted to specific intended majors
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
  • Fewer rivalsRequires at least a 3 GPA
  • More rivalsA five-figure award attracts a bigger field

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
