Kansas Education Opportunity Scholarship
Offered by Kansas Board of Regents · Free to apply
The Kansas Education Opportunity Scholarship is a need-based award of up to $1,850 a year ($925 a semester) for Kansas students who are the first in their family to go to college, or whose parent works as a licensed teacher or paraprofessional in a Kansas pre-K to 12 school. First generation here means neither parent or guardian finished a bachelor's degree; an associate degree or some college is fine. Recipients must be permanent Kansas residents, enroll full time as undergraduates at an eligible Kansas college (state universities, independent colleges, Washburn, and community and technical colleges all count), and have financial need under federal methodology. Priority goes to graduating high school seniors and renewals. To apply, the student files the FAFSA and submits the online application at the Regents' student aid portal by May 1; children of teachers also submit an employment verification form and a birth or adoption certificate. The award renews for up to eight semesters if funds and eligibility continue.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Kansas residents
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
