New Jersey Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF)

Offered by New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education · Free to apply

New Jersey's Educational Opportunity Fund, created in 1968, admits low-income students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds into special programs at about 40 New Jersey colleges and gives them a grant on top of the Tuition Aid Grant, plus counseling, tutoring and usually a pre-college summer program. Undergraduate EOF grants range from $200 to $3,050 a year, depending on the college and need, and renew while the student stays eligible. For 2027-28 the gross income ceiling is $64,300 for a family of four (with an asset cap). Students apply to the college and to its EOF program, which sets its own academic criteria and deadline, and must file the FAFSA or NJ Alternative Application. Seats at each campus are limited.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to New Jersey residents
  • Fewer rivalsAn official transcript is required
  • Fewer rivalsAn income ceiling applies

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
