Kentucky Veterans' Dependent Tuition Waiver
Offered by Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs · Free to apply
Kentucky waives tuition at its state-supported two-year, four-year and technical colleges for the children, stepchildren, spouses and un-remarried surviving spouses of eligible Kentucky veterans. A student may qualify if the veteran died as a direct result of a service-connected disability, is rated 100 percent service-connected disabled, is totally disabled (non-service-connected) with wartime service, or is deceased, lived in Kentucky at death and served during a wartime period. The veteran must be a current Kentucky resident, or have been one at the time of death; the student does not need to be a Kentucky resident but must attend a qualifying Kentucky public college in person or online. The waiver covers tuition only, not room, board, books or fees, and generally lasts until a degree is earned, 45 months are used, or the child turns 26. Students apply after being accepted to the college they will attend; processing takes about 30 days, and the waiver is emailed to the student and the school.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Kentucky residents
- Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
- More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
