Maine Tuition Waiver Program (Public Servant)
Offered by Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) · Free to apply
Maine waives tuition at the University of Maine System, the Maine community colleges and Maine Maritime Academy for the children and spouses of Maine firefighters, emergency medical services providers and full-time law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. A child must have been under 21 when the parent died and must be a Maine resident. The award is the tuition actually waived, renewable for up to five years of full-time study before a bachelor's degree. Applicants mail the application with proof of college acceptance, proof of relationship, the death certificate, a notarized statement from a local official that the death occurred in the line of duty, and a filed FAFSA. There is no deadline.

What drives the odds here

- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Maine residents
- Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
- More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants
How Solyo estimates this: State programs that allocate by published formula are modelled on qualification and filing, not on competition, because there is no selection committee choosing between applicants. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
