South Dakota Jump Start Scholarship

Offered by South Dakota Board of Regents · Free to apply

The South Dakota Jump Start Scholarship rewards students who finish public high school early. Created by the Legislature in 2011 and funded from part of the state aid money saved when a student graduates ahead of schedule, it pays $1,500 for the first year of college, split equally between the fall and spring semesters. To qualify, a student must be a South Dakota resident, complete the state's recommended high school program and earn a diploma from a South Dakota public high school in three years or less, and have attended a South Dakota public high school full time for at least two semesters. Anyone who enrolls in high school for any part of a fourth year is not eligible. The student must enroll within one year of graduating, not counting active military duty, at an accredited college, university or technical school with a campus in South Dakota. The application is released each year on the Board of Regents scholarship portal.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to South Dakota residents
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
