Tennessee General Assembly Merit Scholarship (GAMS)
Offered by Tennessee Higher Education Commission / Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (TSAC) · Free to apply
The General Assembly Merit Scholarship, known as GAMS, adds up to $500 per semester, including summer, to the Tennessee HOPE Scholarship for the state's top high school graduates. To qualify, a student graduating from a Tennessee public school or a category 1, 2 or 3 private school needs at least a 3.75 GPA and a 29 ACT or 1330 SAT, taken on a national or state test date before starting college. Tennessee's Uniform Grading Policy gives extra quality points for AP and honors work, and ACT superscores and residual tests are not accepted. Homeschool graduates have their own route through the HOPE homeschool rules. There is no separate application: filing the FAFSA applies the student for HOPE and GAMS together, with the FAFSA due by September 1 for the fall term. GAMS starts in the freshman year and continues for as long as the student keeps HOPE at a Tennessee public or private college.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Tennessee residents
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
- Fewer rivalsRequires at least a 3.75 GPA
- Fewer rivalsRequires a minimum test score
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
