Wisconsin Hearing/Visually Impaired Student Grant

Offered by Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board (HEAB) · Free to apply

The Wisconsin Hearing and Visually Impaired Student Grant helps Wisconsin residents with a severe or profound hearing or visual impairment who have financial need pay for college. Students can receive $250 to $1,800 a year for up to ten semesters as undergraduates enrolled at least half time. Unlike most Wisconsin state aid, it can be used at some eligible out-of-state public or independent institutions as well as at UW System universities, Wisconsin technical colleges, independent colleges and tribal colleges in the state, which matters for students considering specialized programs outside Wisconsin. To apply, the student files the FAFSA and submits HEAB's one-page grant application. First-time applicants need the degree of impairment certified by a physician or audiologist, either on the back of the form or with a current audiogram or eye report attached; once a student has received the grant, the certification does not have to be repeated in later years.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Wisconsin residents
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
