Scholarship season peaks now

Why February through April

Most national and local private scholarship deadlines cluster here. The competition is also weaker than in the autumn: many seniors have stopped after submitting applications, so the same effort goes further.

Where the money actually is

Be clear-eyed about proportions. Private scholarships are about 9 percent of undergraduate grant aid; institutional aid from colleges is roughly 46 percent. So:

1. Institutional aid first. Appeals, departmental scholarships and honors awards at the schools that admitted you are where the large sums are. Ask each admissions and aid office what remains available.
2. Local scholarships second. A $1,000 award from a regional employer, credit union, service club or community foundation may have twenty applicants; a national award has fifty thousand. Ask your counselor for the local list — most high schools keep one and few students ask.
3. National scholarships third. Worth entering, low odds.

A working method

• Set a fixed weekly slot — two hours, same time each week. Scholarship work collapses without a routine.
• Keep one master document of reusable material: activities list, two or three core essays, recommender contacts, transcript PDF.
• Apply to everything you are genuinely eligible for, including small awards. Three $1,000 awards are worth more than the one $10,000 award nobody wins.
• Track deadlines in the plan, not in your head.

Watch for

• Anything charging a fee to apply. Legitimate scholarships never do.
• Guaranteed-award claims.
• Applications asking for bank or Social Security details before an award is made.

Do not stop after May 1

Scholarships with summer deadlines exist and almost nobody applies for them. So do awards for continuing students in later years — worth a note now for next spring.
