Kansas Hero's Scholarship
Offered by Kansas Board of Regents · Free to apply
The Kansas Hero's Scholarship (K.S.A. 75-4364) waives tuition and required fees at Kansas public universities, Washburn, and public community and technical colleges for the dependents and spouses of certain military service members and public safety officers, and for prisoners of war. It covers dependents and spouses of service members who died on active duty, or who were disabled in service so they could not continue serving or have a service-connected disability rating of at least 80 percent, and of Kansas public safety officers killed or disabled performing their duties. It pays for up to ten semesters of undergraduate study; summer counts as a third of a semester. Students apply each year on the Regents' online portal and upload the required documents. Deadlines are July 1 for summer, September 1 for fall and February 1 for spring. Funding is limited and first come, first served, and the application closes once money runs out, so families should apply as soon as they know where the student will enroll.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to Kansas residents
- Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
- Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
