Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver

Offered by MI Student Aid, Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential · Free to apply

The Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver, created by Public Act 174 of 1976, waives tuition at Michigan's public community colleges and universities for eligible Native American students. A student qualifies by being admitted to a Michigan public college, being certified by their Tribal Enrollment Department as at least one-quarter Native American blood quantum and an enrolled citizen of a federally recognized U.S. tribe, and having lived in Michigan for at least 12 consecutive months. Eligibility does not depend on grades, full-time status or degree track. The student completes the MITW application (also available by phone), has the tribe certify it, and makes sure the full packet reaches MiLEAP for verification. Once verified, the waiver transfers between Michigan public schools by request.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Michigan residents
  • Fewer rivalsRestricted by racial or ethnic background
  • More rivalsA large award draws far more applicants

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
