NJBEST 529 Scholarship
Offered by New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority (HESAA) · Free to apply
The NJBEST Scholarship rewards families who saved in New Jersey's NJBEST 529 plan. When the beneficiary enrolls at least half time at an approved New Jersey college and the account owner withdraws NJBEST money for qualified expenses that semester, the student can claim a one-time, tax-free scholarship of $2,000 to $6,000. The account must have been open for at least four years before enrollment with at least $1,200 in contributions; the amount rises by $1,000 for each additional two years open and each additional $600 contributed. Either the student or the account owner must be a New Jersey resident. The student applies in NJFAMS, which opens June 1, by December 1 for fall or May 1 for spring enrollment.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to New Jersey residents
How Solyo estimates this: State programs that allocate by published formula are modelled on qualification and filing, not on competition, because there is no selection committee choosing between applicants. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
