South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance

Offered by South Carolina Commission on Higher Education · Free to apply

South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance helps South Carolina residents pay tuition at two-year public or independent colleges: all 16 technical colleges, the four regional USC two-year campuses (Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter, Union) and Spartanburg Methodist College. For the current year it pays $80 per credit hour toward tuition, applied after federal grants and the South Carolina Need-based Grant. There is no grade or income test. Students file the FAFSA each year, must be US citizens or eligible permanent residents, must be South Carolina residents for tuition purposes, and must be degree-seeking and enrolled in at least six credit hours with satisfactory academic progress. It cannot be combined with HOPE, LIFE or Palmetto Fellows, so it mainly reaches students who did not earn those merit scholarships. The amount can change each term with funding and the number of recipients; the college tells each student the exact award.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to South Carolina residents
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: State programs that allocate by published formula are modelled on qualification and filing, not on competition, because there is no selection committee choosing between applicants. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
