South Dakota Needs-Based Grant
Offered by South Dakota Board of Regents · Free to apply
The South Dakota Needs-Based Grant, created by the Legislature in 2013 and funded from the interest on a state education endowment, gives campus aid offices money to help the students with the greatest unmet need. Awards run from $500 to $2,000. There is no separate application: students file the FAFSA, and each participating college reviews the FAFSA and its own records to pick the students on its campus with the highest unmet need after other grants, scholarships, tuition reductions and the family contribution are counted. Funds are divided among colleges based on their share of Pell-eligible students. Participating schools include Black Hills State, South Dakota Mines, South Dakota State, the University of South Dakota, Dakota Wesleyan, and Lake Area, Mitchell, Southeast and Western Dakota technical colleges. Because each campus awards from a fixed allocation, filing the FAFSA early and meeting the college's priority date gives the best chance.

What drives the odds here
Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.
- Fewer rivalsOpen only to South Dakota residents
- Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only
How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
