Indiana Tuition and Fee Exemption for Children of Disabled Veterans or Purple Heart Recipients

Offered by Indiana Commission for Higher Education and Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs · Free to apply

Indiana waives tuition and regularly assessed fees at its public colleges and universities for children of veterans who suffered a service-connected death or disability, or who received the Purple Heart or were wounded by enemy action. The exemption covers up to 124 semester credit hours over eight years, at the undergraduate resident rate. For parents who enlisted before July 1, 2011, it covers 100 percent; for later enlistments, it covers 20 percent plus the parent's VA disability percentage. Students who graduated high school in 2023 or later can also use up to $5,000 a year at Indiana private nonprofit colleges. The veteran must have listed Indiana as home of record at enlistment or lived in Indiana at least five years before the student applies, and the student must apply before turning 33. The family completes a one-time application on ScholarTrack, reviewed by the Indiana Department of Veterans' Affairs, and files the FAFSA every year.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Indiana residents
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
