Ohio Safety Officers College Memorial Fund

Offered by Ohio Department of Higher Education · Free to apply

The Ohio Safety Officers College Memorial Fund pays college costs for the families of people killed in the line of duty. It covers 100 percent of tuition and student fees at Ohio public colleges and universities, and a portion of those charges at private colleges, for associate and bachelor's students; certificate students get up to $8,000 a year. It is open to the child, spouse or qualified former spouse of a peace officer, firefighter or other qualified safety officer killed in the line of duty anywhere, and to the child or spouse of a US armed services member killed in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom or a presidentially designated combat zone. The student must be a current Ohio resident, though residency at the time of the death is not required, and must not qualify for the Ohio War Orphan Scholarship. There is no state deadline: the family brings a line-of-duty letter, the report of casualty and any marriage certificate to the college's financial aid office, which contacts the state.

What drives the odds here

Odds on a scholarship are mostly a question of how many students can enter. Each rule below changes the size of that field.

  • Fewer rivalsOpen only to Ohio residents
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a military or national-service connection
  • Fewer rivalsRequires a specific life circumstance
  • Fewer rivalsOpen to a single grade level only

How Solyo estimates this: We model the applicant field from how narrow the eligibility rules are, then divide the awards available by that field. Requirements such as essays and recommendation letters improve a serious applicant’s odds, because most browsers never complete them. These are estimates derived from each award's published structure, not reported acceptance rates, which almost no scholarship provider discloses. Treat them as a way to rank where the hours go, not as a guarantee.
