Children and spouses of service members who died in the line of duty, died from a service-connected injury or illness, are missing in action, or became totally disabled for purposes of employability from service-connected causes receive their own Hazlewood exemption of up to 150 credit hours. This is a separate entitlement from the Legacy transfer and it is not drawn from the veteran's own balance, which is the distinction most scholarship listings lose. It exempts tuition and most fees at Texas public institutions. Because it is statutory, a qualifying family receives it rather than competing for it.
