Only ONE child may hold the assignment at a time. Unused hours can be reassigned to another child later, so families sequence children rather than splitting the balance.
The veteran must have unused hours remaining. The exemption covers up to 150 credit hours in total and the balance follows the student across Texas public institutions.
Covers Texas PUBLIC institutions only. Private colleges are not covered, and living expenses, books and supply fees are excluded.
Hours are unavailable for any term in which the veteran's federal VA education benefits already cover tuition and fees. This is the condition families most often miss.
Apply through the institution's veterans office using forms TVC-ED-1 and TVC-ED-1a. Re-verification is required EVERY TERM: filing once does not carry forward.
